Like can they just stop lying about it. There are obviously players that have no problem with pay to win mechanics. Just say it's p2w or just dont bring it up at all.
8:55 "this game is not paid to win, because everyone get to the same cap eventually" …. for some reason this reminds me of Star Citizen and their die hard user base claiming that their game isn't paid to win either, when it comes to buying the more expensive space ships.
I play Magic the Gathering and in the last couple years WotC has shown itself to be monetizing whatever it can to extreme, greedy levels. This game will get monetized the fuck out of it because thats just WotC are.
They could make money from selling color changes to spells (appearance only or maybe to include one special card to fit your 2 color restriction) and creature appearance options which is all flavor not power. People like "fashion" and being unique. I personally don't care if you can get ahead with cash if I can get it playing but I don't pvp and base my life happiness on winning at a game.
Yea, pass, I agree that the card-building aspect is really interesting, just being able to costumize a character to such a level would be wonderful in a game, but perfect world, mobile port, scummy practices with "micro" transactions, pass. I might try it out, but I'll not have my hopes up that's for certain.
Gave up on MTG couple of years ago, after playing for 20 years with the same group of friends we've decided from now on we are playing only old editions that we buy in bulk. MTG has gone to shit.
Game companies are always trying to change the definition of play to win so it does not apply to their game. And there will always be fanboys who fall for it and defend them. I might play it and quit if the paywall slows down progress too much.
While I totally agree with your comments on monetization I think the common understanding of play-to-win is that there is a pay-wall, meaning you HAVE to pay-to-win, not only that it is an option. This is probably what they mean. I've played games that claim that but then require such an awful grind that playing just isn't worth it, or fun for very long. E.g. technically there is no pay-wall if you are willing to play 23 hours a day…obviously total BS and demonstrates what a company thinks of its players, but technically no pay-wall so not pay-to-win…just pay-to-have-fun-playing… This ruins games but some companies just don't care (Gameloft for example).
Thanks for the heads up. I'll wait and see how they monetize the cards before I even consider playing. edit: Oh p2w, roger that, ignored. 🙂 Have fun and stay safe.
I did play the alpha test a few months back. If you are interested I can give you some of the notes that I sent back to the developers about the game. I did honestly test this game as an interested party like yourself, and I feel like I have a very objective opinion on the subject.
Look for Ziltoid in your discord 😀
PS: You totally have to use mana for your abilities by the way.
Another great one, I super relate to the monetization call out. Met quite a few online players that have the same mentality – if we all can get there, a cash boost isn't p2w. Wrong.
Small things you missed, he said cards max at 10. So yeah if it doubled damaged with a level up, safe to say lvl 10 is busted. Although the RNG of the abilities keeps broken cards in check. I don't fully agree with the RNG mechanic as it is now, but I think it's important that you can't just get one super good card, max it, and use it to breeze through the whole game. The whole deck matters. That being said, makes it seem like a paywall at the same time. Having to keep 12 abilities upgraded and current. Feel like the gameplay won't be too tough although that's what I would've preferred.
Something I didn't hear discussed was the mana. I suspect because the current design may be reworked. If you look at the HUD, beneath the health bar are 9 colored squares. This is your mana pool. The squares beneath the ability icon and the card itself tell you what color and how many bars will be expended on use. Based on the video, it recharges over time in combat. Curious how they will manage colors with that design for dual-colored decks.
"…developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Perfect World Games…" was enough for me to know this game will suck. They have one of the WORST p2w systems ever.
This game will be the biggest pay to win of story. It combines everything. Zen, and cryptic… companys completly sold into turn everything they put their hands into a low quality crash grab. The game its based. Magic the gathering, the first real life gacha cash grab bullshit of the world. The mechanics they show, the leveling cards, a completly grindy mechanic to extract money simple, make this combination good sell it, sell ways to level up cards etc, then nerf it repeat.
Played on the alpha, you learn your spells very quickly, you just put similar spells in the same slots. You don't have to look after like 10 mins. I hate the grey hue that is over everything though, like Diablo 3, makes it look like a kids game and kills the atmosphere.
I rarely dislike videos, but bruhhh YOU like to shut off your brain and "worry about the game." I love the aspect of consequences of using my abilities. FINALLY there's a game like that.
the spell system is definitely indictative that this is gonna be a different ARPG then your typical one. your standard ARPG clearly is all about min maxing one or two spells and it turns into just micromanaging your items. This game looks like its slower paced and you actually have to think about how you fight.
If you're (generic 'You', not aimed) going to complain about P2Win, and whimper abotu booster packs… Then you really should stop playing even MTG's card game- let alone TCGs as a whole, as well. I mean… those are literally pay to win too, with people paying hundreds of dollars for specific cards…
And now all of a sudden it's a problem? Get over yourselves, I mean, c'mon.
I just need a new Shandalar game where you build a 60 card deck and RPG your way across the map/world collecting new cards and stuff by beating enemy (decks). This right here is even worse than D3; and that's saying alot.
IMO: When I think ARPG, I automatically think itemization, loot, treasure, etc… This game has no items. So for me, it comes across as an action game and not an ARPG. Sort of like Sacred 3 or Final Fight for SNES. Imagine playing Final Fight and the only thing you play for is to upgrade Haggars punch.
I think its exciting to think about collecting cards, upgrading them, and trying out different card builds to blow stuff up with but I feel it will grow old.
As for the payment model, it's perfect world. Neverwinter Online is an ultra cash shop game. Magic: Legends will 100% be ultra cash shop.
@KiraTV at 15:39 you talked about not using mana, but there's clearly a mana bar under the health bar in the gameplay footage that shows the UI. The last one is a red/blue. I think adding more colors would definitely increase the difficulty, if you're playing a 3 color deck you'd have to manage 3 colors of mana as well as constantly checking to see what spells you have available.
I really enjoyed mtg when I played it, but I quit because of the high cost to stay competitive (and the birth of our child). The point is, MTG is inherently p2w, so a computer game based on it is most likely going to be p2w … That’s not to say it will be a bad game, I’ll probably try this given how much I enjoyed playing the card game back in the day.
god damnit another f2p game trying to make money – how dare they try to make money from a game they made – can't these devs just learn to survive on air already pfft
I really don't get how the graphics is poor. My initial impression as a huge ARPG fan is that this is as good as or better than any other ARPG in terms of visuals. It really shits over all current titles except Wolcen in terms of looks. Be interested to understand what your benchmark is
I'm not a fan of microtransactions when they are intrusive. For me the fun of an (A)RPG is the grind, the reward of finding and earning items through time and effort. So ignoring the "save time" monetization is not an issue, because short-cutting ruins the game for me. However, if there are going to be UI elements, items or options in the game which are restricted to the purchasable currency, that would ruin the immersion and experience. Short version: don't care how much monetization they have provided it's easy to ignore

Cute P2W mobile game.

Bruh, a game that turns into a job, better get a real job instead, that'll help better more xD
I got an invite to the alpha that starts Feb 11 lol. Don’t even remember signing up
This is so dogshit now lmao Another great potential just ruined lol

Shouldn't there be tons of summons in the game? I don't know much about Magic but isn't summoning an important part of it?
Yea, pass, I agree that the card-building aspect is really interesting, just being able to costumize a character to such a level would be wonderful in a game, but perfect world, mobile port, scummy practices with "micro" transactions, pass. This monetization method will prevent any hardcore magic fans from really getting into this.
Cryptic, don't need anything more to already know how it will evolve.
It looks good but the skills rotating is shit
Perfect world? Lmao, no thanks.
Yeah Kira is right, it's totally pay to win. Not interested
It doesn't look very good though I hope others will like it. As others said, the publisher and key rebinding could get annoying really fast.

I have a alpha key and I'm not interested to take part in. Would like it if I send it to you?
Hey bud, great vid!

Same cashgrab pay to win as MTG, MTG:Arena but worse

Tbh, magic the gathering has a shit monetization system too so they are being consistent with the brand

When the glasses are on you know shit will be hitting the fan. Figuratively and literally.

Yeah mate I'll pass on this one I can wait for Diablo 4 and see how that works out.
