I was lucky enough to get some hands on time with Magic Legends – an Action Role Playing Game from Cryptic Studios based upon Wizards of the Coast’s iconic table top card game. But does the turn based collectible card game translate well to the world of video games? Some unique customisation options look promising, but I have to ask – where is the Magic?
Thank you to Cryptic Studios for inviting me to this preview press event.

Ok, it’s seems like imma degenerate cause I wanna play Dredge in this game now, I want my fix!
So it’s garbage?
One day WotC will realize their folly.
Then they'll make an updated version of the original 1997 Micropose Magic the Gathering.
It was a more perfect Magic game.
Hmmm…. Looks very…. Brown…
It says something to me that they went with Shock and Char but not Lightning Bolt. It just kinda feels like some of the picks have been haphazard and random rather than purposeful and considered, especially Char which is kinda obscure at this point.
I'll give it a chance, might even try streaming it on Twitch
Great game review btws
They have built MtG lore for decades, and then just treat it as if it was just generic fantasy. Again, Hasbro sucks at handling this IP.
I have also played in the Closed Beta, and let me tell you this game is absolute $hit! The complete and total randomness for what spells (cards) will appear on which keys/controls at any given time made the game unplayable for me. I am a huge fane of ARPG, Hack-N-Slash and MTG. So I thought this was a no brainer for a game I must play/. I am so happy I did not waste my money on it.
Take a hard pass on this one!!
I got to play in alpha and I'm excited to play at release to see what they have increased. I really like the card draw aspect and MTG theme, I absolutely agree though they should use MTG art at the minimum
Grim Dawn already looks more like an MtG game and has ZERO microtransactions. I'll try this on open beta but to say I'm anything more than 'aware' of this one is too much for me without a major overhaul/commitment to making a full, paid product.
I have to wonder if the license didn't permit access to art
Less hyped, but still going to give it a go
I think it looks pretty interesting from the perspective of replicating some of the card game mechanics in an ARPG. The lack of classic MTG artwork doesn't bother me all that much because not all of it might work in this specific format, and so in choosing between doing all new artwork and a mix of new and original, I can understand them wanting to have a consistent visual look and just go for all new artwork in a consistent style. The biggest question in my mind will be the monetization….. Since the original MTG monetization model of randomly seeded game pieces in booster packs is probably the most predatory model you can imagine, I do hope they go for something different.
So GameDev company makes ARPG card game and can't bring to market. They get a contract from WOTC to get assets and built-in player base. WOTC gets more of that sweet sweet MTX. Sounds like a re-hash of the Diablo mobile thing a couple years back where it was just a re-skin of another game ("you guys have phones, right").
Hm i played that other mobile game for magic 'mana strike', and the thing that really triggered me was the use of generic ceatures and spells that were not named after real magic cards, while for all the spells I could think of fitting magic cards from the top of my head! so it was just lazy and generic… and aparantly it has been terminated within a year of its release…
Kind of sad if this game is the same catagory, since its so simple to just do better, and wont last a year if its cookie cutter boring.
I got to play the during one of the week long alpha tests, and I loved it. I thought the combat flowed well, and spells felt good to cast. My main issues came with how hard it seemed to be to get new spells, and the confusing map layouts
Forget about the RPG game, when will we be graced with an awesome MTG fantasy series?. The lore, the artwork, the amazing characters. It's all there!
game is hot garbage
Obligatory comment for the algorithm.
Hi ! I'm pretty sure that they don't have the rights to use any of the cards graphic assets into a the game. For sure, they didn't planned a game when they signed royaltees with the artists
I mean if they are smart if they do some kind of time travel they could have your character old magic story's so the missions have a better plot and story o go along with and be able to attract old magic fans of being able to play some of their favorite story's.
"if is not useful why is it in the game" 100% of mmo's lack an answer for this question
Awesome critique. Also those numbers punched out of mobs are ultra lame,
I just don't see the allure. It's fine but doesn't look anywhere near as amazing as divinity 2. Its just a very high bar to clear. Really doesn't look like it scratches the MtG itch either. The depth of strategy is why I play the card game, and it looks like this ain't it.
I got into the closed alpha but it ran poorly for me so i couldn't get too much done 🙁
Can't wait until they have unique playable Legacy Legal promo cards tied to this product!
Honestly doesn't look horrible but I played enough Diablo 2 to make me never want to enter this genre ever again.
I would salivate at an MTG themed SRPG though.
As someone from the game design industry, this seems extremely weird.
If you're trying to gain players for this game from the MtG community and trying to gain new MtG players through this, the best way to do that would be making the spells and enemies recognisable. If someone picks up this game, likes it and then checks out MtG, they'll see the card Shivan Dragon and go "Oh, sick, I summoned this in the game". But if it only has the same name and doesn't share art or appearance, there's not much to recognise and get excited about.
No. No eldrazi? No familiar things? No point. I can imagine the macrotransactions will be insane.
Thx, I'll wait for Diablo 4. This honestly looks like a mobile game.
My thought process: Is it owned or controlled by Tencent or a subsidiary of Tencent/ActivisionBlizzard esque model Mobile game dogshit? If yes then I won't waste an iota of attention on it. it looks like its going to fail hard unless it is extremely predatory with it's monetisation practices and floats on its whales for a few years before we start seeing articles about the company selling your info on the back end to chinese investors.
