Magic Legends Is Dead – Speedrunning Game Failure

Magic Legends was an attempt at an MMORPG originally, then an ARPG and a failure at both of them. Cryptic Studios, Perfect World Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast all working together to deliver one of the worst AAA game experiences I’ve seen in years.

October 31st is the closure date, they are giving full refunds though so good on them for that.

  1. Why do these relatively large, successful, Tabletop gaming companies always manage to fail to deliver a compelling digital experience for gamers.

Shadowrun for the Xbox360 immediately comes to mind. The abyssmal pathfinder game. World of Darkness online was pulled out of development by CCP. Warhammer 40k Online from Vigil games never released due to THQ bankruptcy. Warhammer Online was shutdown. Dungeons and Dragons online is still around but feels like it's in maintenance mode.

This disconnect between the IP holders, the development studios and the fans of the IP is just pure insanity.

  2. I as a Magic: The Gathering fan am both happy and sad that this game is getting shelved. Happy because no one else will become prey to its micro transaction system, and sad because this was another wasted opportunity to get a more than half decent MTG video game. 🙁

  3. Cryptic is a studio where you mostly know what getting into when you play their game. Generally, they get the fun aspect down right, even free to play if you can ignore the fact that a week ago a large portion of their player base found out if you put a negative value into the auction house you can generate infinite premium currency. Rather than roll back the game or ban the exploiter they ignore reports of it and ban people fed up with it that makes a hail mary attempt to publish it on the forum as "spreading exploits". If you just run with a small group of people and just ignore everything it's a fun game, their "fans" at this point know what to expect. However, they have a very wide approach to design and you see things you never get in any other MMO, like using knockback spells to knock an enemy off ledges for an instant kill…but was used in the dungeon editor to instantly level up to max level.

They design very interesting mechanics for their games like champion dodge tank were better at mitigating haymaker damage because your dodge chance and avoidance stat is multiplied by how long it takes to wind up an attack but worst against small channel ability because it halves it since they tick every half a second whereas "brick" tank have mechanics that reduce flat damage so the reverse is true. If you like "flavor" in games like MtG a lot of their mechanics are like that, and it's often time more fun to theorycraft their games than play it, there a munchkin element to playing their game. Expect any complaint to reach deaf ears as while they allow you to for example create a superhero who uses power armor they neglect that class for years. Also, expect an endless horde of sycophants to defend them. And don't expect them to respect your time, passion, or money roll with the punch or get out.

  4. The core mechanic of the game was that the abilities on your hotbar changed into different random abilities each time you used them.
That's HORRIBLE. You have to stare at your hotbar to even know what abilities you have from moment to moment.
Someone with a basic grasp of how videogames work could tell you that was a bad design.

  5. Wizard's policy doesnt just suck, but the way the treat the LGS that host tournaments, the products and price point they try to sell to the playerbase, and now the "MMO" they got Cryptic to try and make is all just bullshit.

When have you ever heard someone say they liked playing MTG Online before Arena came out? If magic wasnt one of the first card games that paved the way they would of been gone the same time Duel Master sped run it's way out of the TCG genre 😂🤣 (Duel Masters was made by WoTC btw)

  6. i didn't think it was a terrible game, it had major potential and was fun game play wise, the problem for me was technical performance, it was just turd, the cryptic engine is terrible for games like that

the lag opening menus, cut scenes not even having sound on spells etc, it was just awful.

  7. the lootboxs are cosmetic only, whole cashshop other than QOL stuff yeah, but also i like how they will turn off ability to buy lootboxes if u ask them too if you have a problem with gambling (talking about POE and Grinding gear games).

  8. Who expected anything less? They couldn't even be arsed giving servers outside of the u.s. not to mention cash shop worked fine, game did not. I hope everyone who gave these devs money feel incredibly stupid right now. Also makes me happy that within 4 months they've announced closure. Need less scammer devs in this industry.

  9. As a fan of mmos and mtg, I was pretty excited for this when it was first announced. It would have been really amazing to have a full on mmo in the setting of mtg. So many amazing places and characters. Seeing places like Innistrad, Ravnica, Dominaria, Mirrodin, etc in an actual game world. Getting to meet iconic characters like the members of the Gatewatch. Maybe even have them be the class trainers or something. So much lore and possibilities.

Then they changed over to an arpg, and while I would have preferred an mmo for this kind of game, I enjoy arpgs too and I thought I'd still enjoy it and still get to see the places and people I wanted to see in game.

Then I got into the alpha, and I have to say, the card system really turned me off. I just wanted an mmo or arpg with mtg themes. I didn't want some shoehorned in card/deck mechanic that feels incredibly awkward. Never knowing what exact abilities you'll have access to a any given time. Having abilities not be on the same buttons because you randomly draw them. You can't really have a proper build like that, so it just felt like you might as well just mash buttons and hit whatever isn't on cooldown. It's just meaningless. It was so bad I didn't even want to play it on launch.

And then it launched, with all the bs mtx and no real effort to make a good game behind it. I saw a few first impressions/reviews, including yours, and I just 110% gave up on it ever being good. It was just a waste.

  10. Man, I called this when it was first announced. I'm a big MTG fan, so I can't say I'm happy I was right.

At least they are starting to create games in-house now, so let's see if they make games better.

  11. I was tracking the MtG MMORPG and it was right up to the week prior to the Alpha that they called it an MMO. Once the Alpha was being testing all the external messaging had been changed. Its like they did not know the difference between an MMO and an aRPG. Good on them for giving refunds, but this seems like some professional negligence happened somewhere. Whoever is to blame, its a shame this did not work out.

  12. When your game is so bad it can't even cover server costs. Arpgs isn't some mythical game type no one has figured out. Take a look at Diablo,Torchlight,Titan quest ect. take the good ideas add a few of your own. That coupled with a huge IP like Magic the gathering should of been a slam dunk.

  13. If they shut down that quick, the customers need a refund.
I have a ton of MTG cards from their online game, including over 1000 chrome cards. Do you know anywhere/anyone I could sell these to?

  14. What, there shutting it down? Are they gonna bring it back? I grew up playing Magic. Hopefully it comes back better but it seems like there not gonna bring it back. They need to fix it it has potential

  15. I did play the Technical Alpha, wich was confidential. And i saw the Concept of the Game and didn't really know what to think of it. One the One Hand the Deck building and the Summoning was fun. But on the other Hand, random Abilitys and attacks in an ARPG seemed so wrong and didn't felt good at all. There was this disconnect between The Theorycraft and the Gameplay, wich was very odd. I ultimately didn't like it and i knew this Game wouldn't release in a good state. Now i see that i was right to think that.

  16. I spent a grand total of 2 hours in this game.. half an hour was in character creation because of the on-demand textures downloading was destroying my data even on low

  17. I tried it and it was so bad that even had you fixed all bugs and a few issues it would have still been a 3/10 at best.Almost everything was terribly thought out or executed. one mission was so badly designed it made me shake and cry on my chair.

  18. I played Magic Legends whilst also playing slightly similar isometric MMO Lost Ark on the Russian Server at the same time. One felt like work, the other felt like a holiday…
