Developer Cryptic Studios behind the online RPG Magic: Legends based on the Magic The Gathering universe has announced the game will be shutting down on October 31st.
Magic Legends Developer Announces Game Shutting Down
Magic Legends was first released into Early Access in March of this year, and was expected to fully launch later in 2021 for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. However, developer Cryptic Studios have announced they will be shutting down servers on October 31st at 11:59 p.m. PST, and the title will not be fully launching.
Cryptic Studios have shared they have “no plans” to continue working on the game in future. According to the statement released on the official Magic Legends website by executive producer Stephen Ricossa, the game “missed the mark” in terms of vision.
The statement also confirmed that those who have made purchases through Arc or the Epic Games Store will be refunded their full purchase amount. The Open Beta will remain open until servers shutdown, but the Zen Shop will be closing immediately. All items will still be purchasable but through the free in-game currency.
Magic Legends was released as a free-to-play RPG based on the Magic: The Gathering card system which provided spells for characters at random from a deck. The combat offered quick, fast-paced action with multiplayer, letting you build a deck of spells to use in battle. Recently the latest class to be added was the Pyromancer back in May, which featured the power to wield Red mana as a ranged caster.

Yeah I bet they are gonna refund every1. I highly doubt it.
Omg wow i thought they were all guns blazing supporting this. Wow
The problem is they haven't observed what's working & got side tracked by particle effects.
They can't even make Arena into a well functioning game, so this isn't a surprise.
Not really shocked tbh, the game was so bad there was no way it would have been supported for years with the amount of back feedback and negative review they got.
WoTc is literally on a spree of lazy releases, love DnD and Magic, but lately it's clear they're trying to get a lot of money for little content, they need to rethink business models and change the heads of products, ASAP
they needed to rework the game like FF14 a realm reborn, but that was probably too much budget needed
I heard about this game and thought about playing it but never heard anything good about it.
At least nothing good from friends at play Magic, which to be honest I haven't played the card game for a very long time as well.
when the primary motive is grab money from players and not actually give them a joyful experience, they will always fail!
I was hyped for this. Then when I found out it was going to have classes I stopped paying attention. They had a decent idea terrible execution.
Magic the what? Never heard of this.
Ah yes, an Epic only game. Lol, nail in the coffin from the very first day.
I played it when it released. The FPS were shit, the quests were shit and you couldn't play with your friends, but you could matchmade with randoms… wtf… Played for like 4h and had enough.
I'm absolutely not surprised it shut down. When I tried it out it felt like a rather low quality mobile game.
Diablo 3 is actually on console, so it would have had to compete there too
This felt like a phoned in attempt to make a mobile cash op game. Thus it failed like so many of them do.
I was honestly shocked that so many reviewers kept saying this game was good during the beta and that people should get the game. They did this even when it was obvious that the game was a flop on arrival. Im not saying Fextralife was one of those reviewers, but they definitely were hyping this game up on their twitch channel.
– What went wrong?
– monetization)
I stopped at around 30 bucks, when I realized none of the items you got, told you what cards dropped out of them, or what equipment you got, short of a quick little onscreen blurt which wasn't color coded or even logged anywhere.
it's really sad, because what it was supposed to be, was an MtG MMO, what it turned into was crap.
if it couldn't maintain a population during a pandemic…
I have a vague memory of this game being announced, Grim Dawn looks better and I know that it's enjoyable to play.
Alright just the title and the first sentence alone I got to comment, wait, what, huh ? this was one of my most anticipated games of 2020 2021 and it was supposed to come to consoles and now you're telling me I'll never see it ? I suppose if it was that bad, I mean really was it ?
I was looking forward to this game.Regardless of the reviews,I was going to play.It looked good to me.
Prevented to progress; reminds me of Fallout 76. Now they are making some changes to how much of certain resources you can crunch or collect each day – but that's almost 2 years after launch. The excuse of storage was given a while back, but that didn't stop them from allowing VIP subscriptions to collect unlimited amount of resources of certain kinds (junk). Another similar thing is the quests – there's just not enough quests in FO76. You know when you have farmed what you can. The end game consist of 2 raid like events. That's it. I am amazed that FO76 still exist.
3 months, this game had so much potential and they ruined it. Not gonna lie it felt like a money grab from the beggining and they kinda deserved it, companies always getting cheeky trying to get as much money as possible.
For me I played at launch and the game worked so bad I lost all interest, but I really wanted it to be good
I mean, the only redeeming quality of Neverwinter was the graphics and the perspective, and they went ahead and made the game isometric, really didn't expect much from Perfect World and Arc
Seriously? This didn't even fully release? SMFH!
Sounds like too much of a Fee to Pay game, always asking for more money for very little. Magic has so much lore and content, and so many stories already written it should have been easy for everything other than combat design. Sadness.
I got the email yesterday and was quite shocked, I stopped playing after the first weekend as the game was to visually cluttered for my tastes (reminding me of the force unleashed and that game gave me a headache after playing for an hour) but I wasnt really expecting it to close down well at least not this fast.
It's a shame as the MTG setting is a great one that could with the right game type (diablo wasnt the right game for it) be tons of fun, it has deep lore and an engaging magic system they just need to forget that card idea and treat them more like spells, cards work in a card game which they already have so trying to do a card not card game just wont work.
I feel as though too many “games” now days are actually just cash shops with game mechanics attached to them
i think devs is waaay too honest that they just want your money
Cryptic will survive pretty fine. The money came from Perfect World and the profit would've went back to them and Wizzards.
I feel like they build the game about making money. They wanted to go all the way to greed and then maby make a game around it… so sad love Magic, but it is predetory… Hope my child will grow up in a world without lootboxes and gambling, i have still some time but not much hope….
That is really sad. I was super looking forward to trying this out once it came to consoles.
Kinda of a bummer to me tbh, game wasnt Great, but it wasnt THAT bad either. . . .
Damn that was quick. Classic wizards stumbling around in clown shoes.
Reputation was being lost from cryptic because the devs were not very good. They need to refund money or their rep would have been tarnished completely as the game would have been seen as a sneaky cash grab to steal money and close when no more money can be made. Refund saves cryptic some face.
